So-Youn Kim was an AmeriCorps volunteer with Oasis for Girls from 2007-2008.

Born and raised in San Francisco, So-Youn returned to the city to work with Oasis for Girls after college, with a degree in Sociology from Stanford University. She had a passion for working to empower women and girls and address the injustices she saw in the world around her. She loved working with the girls at Oasis and was inspired to enter a teaching career.

In 2008, she entered the Peace Corps and served in Tamegroute, Morocco, where she also worked to build community among women and create safe spaces for them to gather. In 2009, she became unexpectedly ill and died while in Morocco. You can read her blog of her time in Morocco here.

So-Youn was a free spirit, who touched many lives around her, and lived life to the fullest. We remember her light, courage, and passion. Slideshow of photos.
